Every picture tells a story and this one tells of a glass of wine…finally… after a big day. Certainly with Chris there is never a dull moment and much territory to cover. We left this morning and after our essential coffee (at Einstein, Hammy) we set off for the Berlinische Gallery of modern Berlin Art. All these gallery are in fantastic buildings which are in themselves worth going to see. It was particularly so, also, of the Jewish Museum yesterday. Amazing spaces. Anyway it was a nice gallery with a particular emphasis on artists from Berlin which seems to have been such a vibrant, creative and original city both before and then after the Third Reich and the Russians.
We had to leave there because Chris had worked out there was a cruise on the Spree for an hour at 1pm. We’re getting very good at public transport now so we subway/bus fairly efficiently…I’m the guru on transport. Chris tells me where she wants to go and like a clever little possum I work out how to get there. So back we went up to where the cruise was to leave from only to find it had left at 12.30!! Bahboom!! Then Chris went to enquire about the next cruise only to get the rudest prick of all time..she is currently writing her comments regarding that experience on Trip Advisor!! So we decided not to wait around for the next cruise but to move on. We went back where we had come from to see a community garden Chris had read about and was kean to see. She promised me there was a lovely restaurant there. Another little Bahboom!!… the garden was definitely in winter mode and although it is probably splendid in the warmer months, after 10 minutes we’d seen enough!!. Onward and upward…this time to the East Side Gallery which is the longest stretch of the wall that remains and has been graffiti’d with some amazing art all along the 1.6 Km that is there of the wall. It is pretty incredible.
From there we headed off to the Nueun Marktthalle which has a wonderful food market that happens on a Thursday night. We got there quite efficiently (I’m so smart!!) and were early so we went to a great pub in the same building and had a glass of wine and rested before the onslaught on the market. Hence the photo. I’d been whinging that I needed a glass of wine for ages so was particularly satisfied when I finally sat down with my vino!! The food market was a buzz. The people were pouring in. There is food from around the world, wines and beers aplenty. We hadn’t eaten all day so after my wine at the pub and delicious roll of delicious beef of some kind I decided I couldn’t cope with any more. Chris persevered but we were soon ready to head home.
We stocked up with wine and again the trip home was brilliantly orchestrated with my new found talents of managing the public transport part of our organisation.
We’re now firmly ensconced at home, we’re warm and have polished off a little more wine and will be ready for bed any minute. Chris’ time here in Berlin is going very quickly and I’ll really miss her when she heads back to Rome. I reiterate that having a travel partner is great!!
