A quick word before I set out for Day 2 in Hamburg. Its a hard city to get to know so I’m struggling a bit to get the vibe. I set out yesterday morning to try and sort myself out. But wait…first I had to wait for the apt owner to come and remove the smoke detector that had tweeted all night long to the point of sending me totally demented. Anyway I did set out…worked out a ticket for the train and headed into the Hauftbahnhof to the tourist information for my maps and a rail ticket. Had to go somewhere else for a 7 day ticket but did all that OK. Then walked off to the Old City and the Rathaus. wandered around a bit and off to see another site..the Chilehaus. But really not getting a feel for it and wandering aimlessly. So I took Rose’s suggestion and headed for the Art Gallery. The Kunsthalle. That was really very nice. Best because they had an exhibition of the surrealists. I’ve never before seen so many iconic Dali’s together in one area. it was spectacular along with Ernst, Margitte, Miro etc…Great. That took hours and hours so when I emerged it was nearly dark. I headed back for the train and home. The problem with home is that it is COLD. The heating has broken down and it really is frosty.
Anyway, off again this morning with a bit of a better plan for walking around the old town. There was the Sunday Fishmarket on this morning and I really wanted to go but it is on in the early hours (very early hours) and I couldn’t work out how to get there in the dark. I didn’t know if the trains would be running, I didn’t fancy standing on a street corner trying to get a taxi in the dark so I gave up on it. Shame that but its the price you pay for being alone and a bit more daunted than you would be if you had a mate.
